Sometimes the best home improvement is moving into a new home. However, if you don’t do it right you just might end up with a cluttered mess of a home. That’s why it’s important to know how to make a smooth move.
Before you even start to pack, consider whether you want to hire movers to do the work for you, or if you feel confident you can do it on your own. Then, go through the house and see if there is anything you don’t want to take to your new home with you. Better to save the packing space than drag it along.
Evaluating What You Have
Take time to declutter and to figure out what type of packaging supplies you’re going to need. If you have a lot of heavier stuff you’ll want some smaller boxes so they are easy to carry. Always pack heavy stuff in the bottom of boxes.
Set aside a couple of boxes as well, one for trash and one for donations. If you find things you don’t use but they could still be of use to someone, put them in the donate box. If it’s trash, trash it, or have a recycle box for things that can be recycled.
Don’t move things that you don’t use. If you haven’t used something in six months or so, leave it behind. There’s no sense wasting space for things you have no use for.
Organize Your Packing
Pack room by room, and mark the boxes with labels printed from a Dymo label maker, so you know which room in the new place they should be delivered to. This makes unpacking that much easier because you won’t be running from room to room just to get one box unpacked and put away.
Packing and unpacking are both parts of the moving experience, so when you are packing you should also be thinking about unpacking that same box. This will help you ensure that breakables are well wrapped, that boxes are marked, and that everything ends up in the right spot for easy unpacking.
Pick The Right Time To Move
While sometimes you just have no choice when to move, moving during certain extreme weather events can be hazardous to your health and your household items. Professional movers suggest that you move during spring or autumn, if you can. This way you avoid extreme heat and extreme cold.
If you don’t have a choice, at least try to watch the weather and pick a day when it isn’t raining or snowing. You want your items to make it to their new destination dry, and you don’t want to get in an accident on the way.
Moving can be fun, but it is always hard. If you take your time packing you can definitely find unpacking to be a much easier task. Remember, you want your new home organized, so get that stuff put away asap!
